TYPES OF DECKS WE CAN BUILD
There are a variety of decks that can withstand our harsh winter climates as well as be suitable for the warm summer days you get to enjoy your deck on! Depending on permitting requirements and/or your outdoor space’s size, we will customize your structure to be the best version of your vision while following all the guidelines and restrictions put in place by your municipality.
Step 1: You will need to choose between a Wood deck, Vinyl Deck or Composite deck
Step 2: Decide what design of decking you want our team to build. Here are the variations you can choose from:
Trex Composite Deck Builder in Edmonton
Deck King is a Trex-certified deck contractor serving Edmonton and the surrounding capital region. Trex is the world’s largest manufacturer of composite decking and has become the material of choice for Edmonton homeowners looking for a deck that stands up to our -40°C winters without the annual staining, sealing and maintenance that wood demands.
We install the full range of Trex decking lines including Transcend, Enhance and Select, each engineered to resist fading, staining, scratching and mould growth. Trex composite decking is made from 95% recycled materials, carries a 25-year limited residential warranty and has been independently tested to perform at temperatures as low as -40°C without cracking or becoming brittle.
Our team pairs Trex decking with Trex railing systems — including Transcend, Select and Signature aluminium options — to create a unified, low-maintenance outdoor living space. Because Trex products are designed to work together, colour matching and structural compatibility are guaranteed across your entire deck build.
If you’re comparing Trex to TimberTech, Fiberon or traditional wood, our team can walk you through material samples, warranty differences and long-term cost comparisons during your free on-site consultation. Contact us to schedule your Edmonton Trex deck quote.
Wraparound Deck
Similar to a traditional wraparound porch, this type of deck often “wraps around” the house, either on two sides or the entire house. There isn’t much that beats this type of layout as you can usual get either sun or share, have multiple seating areas and exits from the home.
Because of their size and shape, wraparound decks require just the right placement. This means a little bit of prep work to ensure the area, property lines and access into the home is well suited for a wraparound deck. You’ll want to pay attention to things like terrain, runoff and overgrowth.
Attached Deck
Attached decks are the most common in the Edmonton area, especially if your home is 10+ years of age. This type does not fuse deck beams into the side of the house but attaches via a ledger board. If the house includes a solid ban board within its construction, we simply bolt a ledger board to it and then the deck to that.
This type of deck is usually attached to properties’ backs but is common in L-shaped and U-shaped houses.
Detachable Deck
A detached deck is just that, detached from any structure, self-supporting and therefore freestanding. It can resemble an island for a beautiful dining area, be a surrounding for a pool or hot tub or be a foundation for a gazebo.
These structures are usually a low ground level deck with many options for customization. In addition, they can be the perfect solution in areas with bumpy and rocky terrain. These detachable decks, complemented with landscaping flowers, pergolas or a water features can make any backyard space its own home away from home.
Multi-Tier Deck
Also known as two-story decks, these structures are perfect for those with large properties, sloping backyards or families wanting to create multiple entertainment areas.
These decks have different levels connected by steps or paths and can maximize the space you have on your property and add visual appeal!
Rooftop or Over Garage Deck
Do you have a flat roof on top of your garage? If so, having this type of deck is a great way to add outdoor living space to an otherwise useless area.
These decks are ideal for urban dwellers however you will need to check your local zoning to see if rooftop decks are permitted. This type of deck offers the best views, more privacy, and are cooler however they do require a lot of work with permitting, structural engineers and architects.

Do You Need Some Edmonton Deck Design Ideas?
Do you want your deck to be unique and catch all eyes? Here are some design ideas you can consider:
Choose Modern Railing
If your deck’s style is traditional or old-fashioned, you can add a unique and eye-catching touch with modern railings. Some have black balusters that combine perfectly with wood railings or you can go all glass and enjoy those backyard views.
Add a Privacy Fence
If you enjoy your privacy while outdoors relaxing, have a hot tub on your deck or even want some shade or wind protection, you can add a privacy fence by converting the railing into a screen that blocks all of the above.
Build a Pergola
Pergolas are a statement piece that bring an undeniable beauty and elegance to your yard. It’s also a great option if you need a space to relieve yourself from the sun but want the summer air and comfortable hangout spot.

Frequently Asked Questions about Decks
If you have more questions about decks or our deck building services, check out our FAQ section:
Deck costs in Edmonton typically range from $50 to $80+ per square foot installed, depending on materials, size, design complexity, and site conditions. For a standard 250-400 sq ft deck, here’s what to expect:
- Pressure-treated wood: $12,500–$20,000
- Cedar: $15,000–$28,000
- Composite (Trex, TimberTech): $20,000–$40,000+
- PVC: $25,000–$45,000+
Labour accounts for roughly 50–60% of total cost. Additional factors include permit fees (approximately $270 for a standard Home Improvement Permit), screw pile installation, railing systems, stairs, and custom features like built-in benches or lighting. Edmonton’s shorter building season can also affect scheduling and pricing during peak months. Deck King provides detailed, itemized proposals with transparent pricing before any work begins.
Most decks in Edmonton require a Home Improvement Permit, which combines a development permit and building permit into one application. However, a development permit is not required when all of the following are true: the deck is entirely in the back or interior side yard, it’s not on a corner lot’s flanking side, and it’s 1.2 metres (3’11”) or less above ground at every point. A building permit is still required for any deck higher than 0.6 metres (2 feet) above grade, or if it’s attached to the house or has a roof or walls. Even if no permit is needed, your deck must comply with the Zoning Bylaw and Alberta Building Code. Deck King handles the full permitting process — drawings, submissions, and inspection scheduling — so you don’t have to.
Setback requirements depend on your property’s zoning district. In most standard residential zones, a rear yard deck that is 1.2 metres or less above grade must be at least 0.6 metres (2 feet) from the side property line. Decks higher than 1.2 metres have stricter setback and privacy requirements, particularly if they overlook a neighbouring yard. Corner lots, zero-lot-line properties, and reverse housing developments have additional restrictions. Deck King reviews your property’s specific zoning and setback rules during the design phase and ensures every build is fully compliant before permit submission.
Edmonton’s frost line is 1.2 metres (4 feet) deep. All structural supports — whether concrete piles or screw piles — must extend below this depth to prevent frost heave, which occurs when freezing soil pushes foundations upward and can warp, crack, or destroy your deck. Many Edmonton contractors drill piles 10–12 feet deep for added stability, as severe winters can push frost deeper than the minimum. Decks exceeding 1.8 metres in height or located near top-of-bank areas require an engineer-stamped design. Deck King ensures every foundation meets or exceeds Alberta Building Code requirements.
Both are acceptable under the Alberta Building Code, but screw piles have become the preferred choice for Edmonton deck builds. Screw piles can be installed year-round (even in frozen ground), require no curing time so construction can begin immediately, and create far less mess since there’s no excavation. They also lock into Edmonton’s native clay soil, providing superior resistance to frost heave compared to concrete piles that rely on weight and friction alone. If your property has a high water table or is near a water body, screw piles are strongly recommended. Always use engineered screw piles with a torque report — the small DIY piles from hardware stores are typically not long enough for Edmonton’s frost depth. Deck King uses only engineered screw pile systems on every project.
Edmonton’s extreme temperature swings — from -40°C winters to +30°C summers — demand materials that handle repeated freeze-thaw cycles without cracking, warping, or rotting.
Composite (Trex, TimberTech, Fiberon) is the top performer. It resists moisture, UV, rot, and insects, requires no staining or sealing, and lasts 25–30+ years. Premium composites have been tested to -40°C without cracking.
Cedar is the best natural wood option with inherent rot resistance, but it still requires annual staining and sealing to maintain its integrity in Edmonton’s dry winters and wet springs. Expect a 15–25 year lifespan with consistent upkeep.
Pressure-treated wood is the most affordable upfront but deteriorates fastest. Edmonton’s dry winter air causes cracking and splitting, while spring moisture accelerates rot. Expect 10–15 years with annual maintenance.
PVC is the most expensive but stays cooler in summer and is completely impervious to moisture. It’s ideal for covered or partially shaded decks.
Deck King works with all material types and recommends the best option based on your budget, maintenance tolerance, and how you plan to use your deck.
Yes. Deck King backs every project with a workmanship warranty covering our construction and installation. The premium composite and PVC materials we install — from brands like Trex, TimberTech, and Fiberon — carry manufacturer warranties ranging from 25 to 50 years covering fading, staining, and structural defects. We review the specific warranty coverage for your selected materials during the proposal stage. Visit our warranty page for full details.
