TYPES OF DECKS WE CAN BUILD
There are a variety of decks that can withstand our harsh winter climates as well as be suitable for the warm summer days you get to enjoy your deck on! Depending on permitting requirements and/or your outdoor space’s size, we will customize your structure to be the best version of your vision while following all the guidelines and restrictions put in place by your municipality.
Step 1: You will need to choose between a Wood deck, Vinyl Deck or Composite deck
Step 2: Decide what design of decking you want our team to build. Here are the variations you can choose from:
Wraparound Deck
Similar to a traditional wraparound porch, this type of deck often “wraps around” the house, either on two sides or the entire house. There isn’t much that beats this type of layout as you can usual get either sun or share, have multiple seating areas and exits from the home.
Because of their size and shape, wraparound decks require just the right placement. This means a little bit of prep work to ensure the area, property lines and access into the home is well suited for a wraparound deck. You’ll want to pay attention to things like terrain, runoff and overgrowth.
Attached Deck
Attached decks are the most common in the Calgary area, especially if your home is 10+ years of age. This type does not fuse deck beams into the side of the house but attaches via a ledger board. If the house includes a solid ban board within its construction, we simply bolt a ledger board to it and then the deck to that.
This type of deck is usually attached to properties’ backs but is common in L-shaped and U-shaped houses.
Detachable Deck
A detached deck is just that, detached from any structure, self-supporting and therefore freestanding. It can resemble an island for a beautiful dining area, be a surrounding for a pool or hot tub or be a foundation for a gazebo.
These structures are usually a low ground level deck with many options for customization. In addition, they can be the perfect solution in areas with bumpy and rocky terrain. These detachable decks, complemented with landscaping flowers, pergolas or a water features can make any backyard space its own home away from home.
Multi-Tier Deck
Also known as two-story decks, these structures are perfect for those with large properties, sloping backyards or families wanting to create multiple entertainment areas.
These decks have different levels connected by steps or paths and can maximize the space you have on your property and add visual appeal!
Rooftop or Over Garage Deck
Do you have a flat roof on top of your garage? If so, having this type of deck is a great way to add outdoor living space to an otherwise useless area.
These decks are ideal for urban dwellers however you will need to check your local zoning to see if rooftop decks are permitted. This type of deck offers the best views, more privacy, and are cooler however they do require a lot of work with permitting, structural engineers and architects.

Do You Need Some Deck Design Ideas?
Do you want your deck to be unique and catch all eyes? Here are some design ideas you can consider:
Choose Modern Railing
If your deck’s style is traditional or old-fashioned, you can add a unique and eye-catching touch with modern railings. Some have black balusters that combine perfectly with wood railings or you can go all glass and enjoy those backyard views.
Add a Privacy Fence
If you enjoy your privacy while outdoors relaxing, have a hot tub on your deck or even want some shade or wind protection, you can add a privacy fence by converting the railing into a screen that blocks all of the above.
Build a Pergola
Pergolas are a statement piece that bring an undeniable beauty and elegance to your yard. It’s also a great option if you need a space to relieve yourself from the sun but want the summer air and comfortable hangout spot.

Deck costs in Calgary vary depending on size, materials, design complexity, and site conditions. As a general range, expect $21–$70+ per square foot installed. For a standard 16′ × 10′ deck, here’s what typical pricing looks like:
- Pressure-treated wood: $5,000–$8,000
- Cedar: $6,500–$10,000
- Entry-level composite: $6,000–$12,000
- Mid-range composite (Trex, TimberTech): $10,000–$18,000
- PVC decking: $10,000–$20,000
Labour typically accounts for 50–60% of the total cost. Additional factors that affect pricing include permit fees, structural engineering requirements (for elevated or cantilevered decks), railing systems, stairs, and any add-ons like built-in benches or lighting. Deck King provides detailed proposals so you understand exactly where every dollar goes before we start.
Yes, in most cases. The City of Calgary requires a building permit for any deck where the surface is higher than 0.6 metres (2 feet) above grade at any point, or if the deck includes a roof, pergola, or enclosure. If your deck is 0.6 m or lower at every point and uncovered, a permit is generally not required unless the property is within a floodway or within 6 metres of a floodway.
You may also need a development permit if your deck doesn’t meet the standard Land Use Bylaw rules — for example, if it encroaches into required setbacks or exceeds 1.5 metres in height within a Developed Area.
Standard setback rules in Calgary:
- Rear: At least 6 metres (19’–8″) from the rear property line
- Side: At least 1.2 metres (4’–0″) from the side property line
- Front: At least 3 metres (9’–10″) from the front property line
Building permit review typically takes about 7 business days. A development permit (if needed) adds 10–12 weeks. Deck King handles the entire permitting process for you, including drawings, submissions, and inspections.
Calgary’s climate — with extreme temperature swings, Chinook thaws, intense UV in summer, and prolonged winter freeze — demands materials that resist warping, cracking, and moisture damage.
Composite decking (brands like Trex, TimberTech, and Fiberon) is the top performer for Calgary. Composite boards are engineered with UV inhibitors, resist moisture, won’t rot or splinter, and have been tested in temperatures as low as -40°C without cracking. They require virtually no maintenance beyond occasional cleaning and typically last 25–30+ years.
Cedar is the best natural wood option — it has natural oils that resist rot and insects — but it still requires annual staining/sealing and has a 15–25 year lifespan with diligent maintenance.
Pressure-treated wood is the most affordable upfront but is the least durable in Calgary conditions. It warps, cracks, and rots faster due to freeze-thaw cycling and typically lasts 10–15 years.
PVC decking sheds moisture well and stays cooler than composite, but it scratches easily and colours can fade with prolonged sun exposure.
Deck King primarily works with premium composite and wood products and will help you select the right material based on your budget, maintenance preferences, and how you plan to use your deck.
Most residential deck builds take 2–7 business days once construction begins, depending on size, complexity, and weather. However, the full project timeline from consultation to completion is typically 4–8 weeks when you factor in:
- Design consultation and proposal — 1–2 weeks
- Permit application and approval — 7 business days for a standard building permit; 10–12 weeks if a development permit is required
- Material ordering and scheduling — 1–2 weeks
- Construction — 2–7 days
Multi-tier decks, rooftop decks, or projects requiring structural engineering take longer. Calgary weather can also cause delays during spring and early summer. We recommend starting the process as early as possible — ideally booking your consultation in late winter or early spring to secure a build slot for summer.
We build every residential deck type suited to Calgary properties:
- Attached decks — The most common type in Calgary, bolted to the home via a ledger board. Ideal for back-of-house entertaining.
- Detached (freestanding) decks — Self-supporting structures perfect for hot tub surrounds, pool areas, or garden seating in yards with uneven terrain.
- Wraparound decks — Extend around two or more sides of the home, providing multiple seating areas and access points.
- Multi-tier decks — Two or more levels connected by stairs, ideal for sloped backyards or creating distinct entertainment zones.
- Rooftop / over-garage decks — Built on flat roofs to maximize otherwise unused space. These require structural engineering, architect involvement, and municipal approval.
- Low-profile ground-level decks — Great for flat yards and may not require a building permit if under 0.6 m above grade.
We build using composite, cedar, pressure-treated wood, PVC, and vinyl materials. Every deck is customized to your property, lifestyle, and budget.
In Calgary, deck foundations must extend at least 1.2 metres (4 feet) below ground to get below the frost line and prevent frost heave — which is when freezing soil pushes footings upward, causing the deck to shift, crack, or become unsafe.
If your deck design uses footings shallower than 1.2 m, the City of Calgary requires a design review prepared and stamped by a registered professional engineer (APEGA-registered).
For screw pile foundations, a pile design stamped by a professional engineer must also be included with your permit application. Deck King ensures all foundations meet or exceed code requirements so your deck stays level and structurally sound through Calgary’s extreme freeze-thaw cycles.
